When looking at the big picture of the book after finishing it, I realized something about Denver. Even though Denver was not as focused on in the book as Beloved and Sethe, Denver had dramatically changed by the end of the book. I then began to ask myself, What is the cause of her change? I looked more into this question looking for the answer and I think I have found it. The cause of her change is from Beloved.
She had impacted Denver by ignoring her. Denver was always a lonely child due to the negative attention towards Sethe and the 124 household. The only other friends that she had were her tow brothers who had ran away and the dead baby. When Paul D had scared away the dead child, Denver was left all by herself.
"Denver stayed in her emerald closet as long as she could, lonely as a mountain and almost as big, thinking everyboody had somebody but her; thinking even a ghost's company was denied her. So when she saw the black dress with two unlaced shoes beneath it she trembled with secret thanks. Whatever her power and however she used it, Beloved was hers.(123)"
When Beloved popped up, Denvers life began to revolve around Beloved due to her believing that Beloved was meant for her. After realizing that Beloved only cared for Sethe, it made Denver feel completely isolated and alone again. By bringing Denver to rock bottom where she could go no lower, Denver could do nothing else but begin to rise and overcome her struggle of loneliness. She became more independent and less childish. She accepted the relationship with Beloved and Sethe. She accepted her own loneliness. On her own she took care of Beloved and Sethe during their bad days. On her own she began to put herself out there and start to socialize with everyone in town. On her own she found a job. Denver had changed from a lonely childish person to a dependable social person. This is all due to her going to her lowest point possible and being ignored by Beloved.
I completely agree with this. She had been a lonely child since the beginning and I beleive that a person's past experiences are what shape their personality. I believe that how they are raised and what theiy go through is what shapes a person's thoughts and actions, and I beleive Denver being raized alone and with no one to talk to she grew strong and independent and by the end of the book she learned to socialize and take care of herself. Nice work!
