Psychoanalytical Lens

I chose to to use the psychoanalytic lens to view the book with because I think it would be interesting to focus on how the characters think and why they make the decisions they make. We go deeper into their minds and also there is no one right answer because we won’t actually know why they make a choice, we have to make our best guess. Also you might discover a whole different reason for a character’s actions that you never thought of before. I’m hoping to red an interesting book that will have lots of different perspectives that we go deeper into detail on. I also considered the historical lens to understand more on the history of these characters.
I believe a person’s history like how they were raised, what they have experienced, and the decisions they made all make up a person’s personality. Both lens go into detail on how and why a character is formed the way they are, and this fascinates me.

Why I chose the Psychoanalytic lens... Sirena Blog #1

The lens I chose to use is the psychoanalytic lens. In books there are always multiple perspectives involved in the story. I find it amazing to hear multiple views on the same thing, or to hear a 1st person observing others actions. Psychology is something that I have always been interested in. I was always observant of people and always tried to understand others mentally. I even took classes in Psychology due to my interest. Due to this book being about slavery, I think I will find it very interesting to see their perspective of the people in that time period. In this time period, caucasian males that own land were superior to everyone else. Women and other races were inferior. Like the majority of others I believe in equality and that slavery was a horrible part of our American history. Since the time period was so different to our current life, I am excited to try to understand the people in society during that time period. One lens that I considered doing instead of psychoanalytic, was modern history. I was considering this subject because it was another subject that I was very interested in and this was a very important historical time period in America. In the end I chose psychoanalytic due to me thinking that I will be more engaged in the story if I chose this lens. By reading this book I hope to be surprised and I hope that this story is crazy enough to keep me engaged!

I chose the Marxist lens over the other options as I think it will be an interesting lens to look at a book about slavery by. By looking at this book through the Marxist lens it will be interest to look at the differences in social class. I imagine we'll see how white property owners treat slaves the same as property. Back in this time period social classes were much more prominent than they are even in today's extremely capitalistic society. While I already have a pretty good idea about slavery through a historical lens I thought it would be best that I look at this book in a way I normally would not. Hopefully this will give me a better understanding of this very interesting perspective.

Why I chose feminist lens...

The feminist lens is one the I find to have great depth and interest to me. This is because it is one that can easily be identified and seem in many texts that always seems to uncover hidden motives and relations of characters throughout the novel. I have a large amount of experiment with this lens because it has shown up in many other books read in school such as Jane Eyre and The Scarlet Letter. The topics specifically covered by this lens that I have with the most experience is the idea that women are supposed to be the caretakers of the house and supposed to be submissive to men whereas men are supposed to be the money earners of the family, most knowledgeable and have total power over the lives of their partner or the women around them. My personal belief is that women should have total control over their lives and the decisions they make about it. I also believe that it is important to recognize that women are equal to men and that they both have their own power and that women are able to be strong independent women. Besides the feminist lens, the other lens that I was considering doing my project on was the Marxist lens because it is mainly about the social classes and statuses and that is something that is closely tied with the feminist lens, and it is also a lens that I can relate to very easily, and that has shown up in most of the books that I have read so far. Additionally, I am hoping to get one main thing out of this project. I am hoping to be able to thoroughly understand the feminist lens both forwards and backwards so that I can use that skill later in my life as i go off to college and need to apply these skills in my college English classes.
