The lens I chose to use is the psychoanalytic lens. In books there are always multiple perspectives involved in the story. I find it amazing to hear multiple views on the same thing, or to hear a 1st person observing others actions. Psychology is something that I have always been interested in. I was always observant of people and always tried to understand others mentally. I even took classes in Psychology due to my interest. Due to this book being about slavery, I think I will find it very interesting to see their perspective of the people in that time period. In this time period, caucasian males that own land were superior to everyone else. Women and other races were inferior. Like the majority of others I believe in equality and that slavery was a horrible part of our American history. Since the time period was so different to our current life, I am excited to try to understand the people in society during that time period. One lens that I considered doing instead of psychoanalytic, was modern history. I was considering this subject because it was another subject that I was very interested in and this was a very important historical time period in America. In the end I chose psychoanalytic due to me thinking that I will be more engaged in the story if I chose this lens. By reading this book I hope to be surprised and I hope that this story is crazy enough to keep me engaged!
This is why I chose the psychoanalytic lens too, it fascinates me to think about how a character thinks and the way he views things. Its interesting to get into the minds of people because we are all different and were raised to see things in different perspectives. I also visited the website you told me lol, what is wonkie.com? Is it a website with cartoons that bring out different perspectives?
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting that you incorporated historical, and socioeconomic context, into your literary interests. How has your literary lens choice influenced your world view?
ReplyDeleteI think that this lens will be one that can be talked about especially because of the "ghost child." I think that this lens will also help to reveal a lot of explanations for the actions of the characters that may not exactly be seen through other lenses.
